Honeymoon

a 100-word short story
by Joan Gergen Wilson

"Sweet solitude!" he announced unloading gear named Coleman. "No soul for hours."

Drowsily she raised herself to look through the windshield. Where were the wedding white birches, their shadows of lace and champagne shimmer? Where were the picnic tables, the privy, the people?

"Hear the breeze! And, see, just like a mattress," he said fairly hissing and patting the ground where no road led in.

The stubble-faced pines bent to gossip among themselves and whistled lewdly. His hammer insistently hit at the tent stakes, and she could not distinguish it from the desperate pounding of her heart.
