Faculty from Peter Kiewit Institute will lead students in a variety of hands-on workshops focused on familiarizing them with a range of topics such as bridge construction, civil engineering and visual animation. The Academy also includes an educational tour of the Durham Museum's "Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters" exhibit and social events such as "Music on the Green" at the Scott Residence Hall.

Selected at the completion of their junior year, students learn how to participate in the functioning of their state's government in preparation for their future roles as responsible adult citizens. Each participant becomes a part of the operation of his/her local, county and state government. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs. In most cases, expenses associated with attending this program are paid by a sponsoring American Legion Post and Auxiliary, a local business or another community-based organization. Boys State has been a program of The American Legion since 1935; Girls State, since 1937.
